New research has revealed the country’s speeding hotspots

The study assessed counties based on Home Office, DVLA and police data from 2022 to work out the highest ratio of speeding offences per the number of registered drivers.

Researchers discovered that Warwickshire was the worst place to be on the road, with one speeding offence for every 4.58 vehicles.

Staycation favourite Devon and Cornwall came in second with a 4.64 ratio, followed by Greater London in third at 4.82.

Avon and Somerset was fourth with 5.51, while North Yorkshire rounding out the top give at 6.26.

Worryingly for Yorkies, West Yorkshire was then close behind in sicth with 6.49.

Interestingly there was an even north/south divide, with five entries apiece.

At the other end of the scale, Wales acquitted itself well, with both South and North Wales appearing in the bottom 10, with the former actually named the safest area in the two nations with an admirable 43.4 ratio.

Other good performances were registered by Kent, Derbyshire, Cleveland and Nottinghamshire, which all cracked the bottom five.

And, despite neighbouring Warwickshire’s poor score, the West Midlands managed to sneak on as 10th best with a score of 16.7.

Tom Banks, insurance expert at Go.Compare, said: “Speeding is perhaps one of the most common safety risks associated with using our roads, so identifying the country’s hotspots is a key indicator of where the most dangerous places to drive are.

“It seems that the South is home to some of the nation’s worst areas, although the figures for Yorkshire are also particularly concerning.”

“If you ever see other motorists driving dangerously, you should report them to the police as soon as it’s safe to do so by pulling over and dialling 999.

“It’s also important to avoid straying over the limit yourself so that you don’t put the safety of yourself and others at risk.

“If you do exceed the limit and get caught by the police, you’ll likely receive a £100 fine and three penalty points.

“This will also have an impact on the price you pay for your insurance, so putting your foot down is both a pricey and dangerous risk to take.”

It comes after a similar map showed the worst areas of Britain for driving bans, with more than 140,000 motorists disqualified.
