WNBA star Sue Bird, USWNT stalwart Megan Rapinoe announce their engagement

Sports power couple Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird have added another ring to their packed resumes.

Bird, the WNBA icon, shared an engagement photo Friday evening on social media of herself having a ring put on her finger by the the U.S. women’s national team star, who was down on one knee.

The couple has been dating since 2016.

Bird, 40, a four-time WNBA champion and Olympic gold medalist, won her most recent title less than a month ago when the Seattle Storm swept the Las Vegas Aces.

Rapinoe, 35, also an Olympian and FIFA World Cup Champion, currently plays for the NWSL’s OL Reign, who are based in Seattle. With their 2020 season canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, Rapinoe spent the WNBA season inside the league’s bubble in Bradenton, Florida, with Bird.

The two were the first openly-gay couple to appear on the cover of ESPN The Magazine’s Body Issue in 2018. Both women have since been outspoken on the upcoming presidential election and on issues concerning racial equality in America and advocating for women in sports.

The Storm congratulated Bird and Rapinoe on their engagement on Twitter, as did Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden. The Storm, who Bird has played for since she was drafted by the team first overall in 2002, endorsed Biden for president earlier this month.
