Bullsheeters Devlog #4: Ok but like.. how do I card?

Hello Everyone! Welcome back to the Bullsheeters Devlog.

For today’s devlog, we will show you how the base card game works, what are it’s rules and what we changed for our game.

So, without further ado, let’s get to the explanation.

Our inspiration for this game is a variation of solitaire called Scoundrel, where you need to go through as much “rooms” as possible until your health runs out.

I will explain the entire game here, but if you want a detailed explanation, you can check out this video:

Well, let’s get to the rules:

1 – The deck is composed of all cards of a normal deck, minus the jokers, red face cards and red aces;

2 – The player starts with 20 health;

3- Each card suit has a different effect on the gameplay.

Those are the core rules to understand the base of the game, so, lets’ show the cards!

Firstly, you need to take out the cards that were talked bout earlier, and you also need to pull a d20, or any sort of way of keeping track of your life, like a piece of paper or a calculator on your phone / computer.

red cards and dice

I decided to choose a d20 because it’s cooler and fits better the theme of the game.

Next, shuffle your cards, place the first four on the board, place you d20 next to you, and in general create this lineup on your table:

Board Explanation

In each room, you need to take up to 3 cards in each room, and when you grab all 3, you go to the next room, drawing 3 another cards.

But now, what happens when you draw them?:

7HP

The cards with a black suit deal damage to the player.

So, in this case, I took 7 damage, and placed my d20 with the 13 facing up, to tally up my remaining health.

After that, you can place the 7 into the discard pile and take a different card.

Queen Damage

(Don’t mind the HP, it’s just an explanation and I forgot to add up the damage taken)

After the 7, I picked up the 6 of Diamonds, and in this game, cards with the Diamond suit are weapons that help you defend against attacks. The damage that is taken by the card picked up after a Diamond card has the number of said card subtracted.

In this case, I picked up a 6 of Diamonds and a Queen of Clubs, which in this game, Jacks count as 11 points, Queens count as 12 points and KIngs count as 13, so, I took 12 damage minus 6, which would be 6 damage in total.

The interesting part about the weapons in this game, is that they don’t have a limit of which cards they can defend against, but you can only defend a black card that has an equal or smaller value compared to the last card you used on that weapon. More on that later.

new cards

After that, you get 3 more cards to complete the 4 cards of the room, and you just keep going until the dungeon deck is empty.

Now, for some other rules:

Heal and defend

So, explaining 2 things at the same time, just bear with me ok?

So, I had 13 HP, so i defended the 8 of Spades with my diamond card, taking 2 damage only, going from 13 to 11.

Then, I used the Hearts card, that in this game, the Hearts suit represents health regends spread around the dungeon, so, in this case, I went from 11 to 20 due to the 9 of hearts that I picked up.

Here we can see how the rules of the weapons in this game work, and also how to regain health.

Bear in mind that you can only regen health up to 20, as that is the cap for HP in this game.

8 7

After that, I defended the 7 of clubs, taking another point in damage, and got 3 more cards for the room, maintaining the loop.

2 HP

(Here I just simply used a 2 of hearts to regen 1 point of health, because I can’t pass the cap)

After that, let’s talk about another main mechanic from this game:

Being a Scoundrel

So, where does the name come from?

If you end up with a room that doesn’t help you, or has a lot of enemies that can kill you, you have a chance to swipe all of the cards and place them at the bottom of the deck.

But you can only do it once every other room, so if you discard a room, the next one you are obligated to face.

But the cool thing is: you can manipulate the order of the cards, so, go ahead, and be a Scoundrel.

Right or Left

The rules only say that you need to swipe all of the cards in one single move, they don’t say if you need to swipe them from left to right or vice versa. AND, if you have enough experience, you can manipulate the order of the cards on a single swipe, which when you are deep into the dungeon, the right card order can be a life or death situation.

So, If you are a good enough scoundrel, you can manipulate your way out of a loss! How cool is that?

New room

After that, you just get a new set of 4 cards, and continue playing until the deck is over.

New weapon

And that’s basically it!

So, Sorry for the longer devlog, we know it is a lot of text and information, so much that we decided to post the 5th devlog still this week, to show the changes that we did for the core game.

Anyway, that was it, we hope that you could understand the idea for the game, and we look forward to seeing you in our next devlog.

Thank you so much, and until next time!
