Roger Federer’s Monte Carlo Masters record still stands – but it’s one he won’t be celebrating
Roger Federer retired from tennis in 2022, with the Monte-Carlo Masters remaining a rare trophy he never lifted during his illustrious career.
The Swiss legend played the event 13 times but never managed to win it, largely because of Rafael Nadal’s dominance on clay.
Federer made it to four finals at Monte Carlo, losing three times to Nadal between 2006 and 2008, and once to Stan Wawrinka in 2014. He made his last appearance at the event in 2017.
The Swiss Maestro had planned an ambitious schedule that year, but was unable to participate due to a lack of fitness.
The defending champion, Carlos Alcaraz, also missed the competition as he was still recovering from a forearm injury sustained at Indian Wells.
