Kentucky baseball opens SEC play with a win over Alabama

Friday marked the start of conference play for the Kentucky Wildcats baseball team. Their opening SEC series is with the Alabama Crimson Tide, and the Wildcats have started things off with a 7-4 victory to mark their 11th straight win.

Alabama opened up the scoring, but Kentucky answered quickly, scoring two first inning runs on an Ethan Hindle homerun. That wouldn’t be the only homer of the game. Ryan Schwartz and Owen Jenkins also hit long balls to push the Cats out to a 7-1 lead. The Tide would make a late run, but they came up short.

Hindle had two hits, including the homerun, and drove in two runs. The Schwartz bomb was also of the two-run variety, and was his lone hit on the day. Luke Lawrence was on base twice, and scored both times.

On the mound, Jaxon Jelkin picked up his fourth win. He went 5.1 innings and gave up six hits and four runs. The bullpen went 3.2 innings and surrendered just two hits and no runs. Jack Bennett picked up his fourth save.

Game two of the series will begin at 2:00 P.M. ET on Saturday.
