Emma Navarro has been ranked as high as No. 8 in the world, but since the summer of 2024 she’s been slowly falling further and further away from that career-high. Currently sitting at No. 27 after a disastrous attempt at a title defense, Navarro has to perform at the Sunshine Double to keep herself afloat.
Unable to Replicate Past Performance
One of the highlights of Navarro’s 2025 season was her victory at the Mérida Open, where she blitzed through the draw and capped off the week with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the final. Although the rest of Navarro’s season didn’t live up to the standard she had set for herself, she at least had that win to fall back on.
A year later, though, those points expired and Navarro couldn’t get any of them back. She lost in her opening match in straight sets to Zhang Shuai, and her title defense was over before it even began.
This wasn’t the first time this season Navarro couldn’t back up her performance in the previous year. Navarro made the quarterfinals of the 2025 Australian Open, but this season she lost in the first round. Navarro’s ranking continues taking big hits, and if she can’t get big points on the board to counter that, she’ll slowly sink.
Opportunities in the Sunshine Double
Navarro can certainly play on clay, but it’s far from her best surface, so she has to perform well at the Sunshine Double. Navarro has made the quarterfinals at Indian Wells before, and though she’s never had a good result at Miami it’s certainly a surface she can do well on. Having a cushion for her ranking before clay season could be massive for her.
She has a tough draw in Indian Wells, but if she can find her best form she is certainly capable of going deep. Her projected third-round opponent, Madison Keys, hasn’t played since the Australian Open and generally hasn’t been playing her best tennis.
If Navarro can get past that, though, she’ll likely face reigning Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina. That matchup feels like a near-impossible task to overcome, but if Navarro wants to get back to top-10 level then she has to get top-10 wins.
Stopping the Downward Spiral
At the end of the day, it doesn’t have to be the Sunshine Double. But the more Navarro loses early, the worse her confidence and form will get. She has to turn things around as soon as possible, and the last two hardcourt tournaments before clay could be her best chance.
