Colts' Ballard ranks near bottom in free agent spending since 2020

Since 2020, the Indianapolis Colts have been one of the least active teams in NFL free agency.

Jason Fitzgerald of Over the Cap recently ranked each team by how much they’ve spent in free agency between 2020 and 2025 and how many free agents they’ve signed.

A few caveats to note as Fitzgerald put together this list were that only free agent signings in the months of March and April counted, and the deal had to be for at least $2 million. This data also only included new additions and not any re-signings.

During that span, the Colts‘ 15 free agent additions that qualify for this list are tied for the sixth-fewest in the NFL. Indianapolis is also the eighth-lowest spender in average free agent dollars each offseason at $125.98 million.

However, when GM Chris Ballard has made signings, he has spent big, with the Colts average contract per player ranking near the top of the league at $8.39 million.

Overall, the Colts are ranked 27th in Fitzgerald’s rankings.

“We like our guys,” is a familiar phrase that Ballard has said over the years, which is, in part, why the Colts rank near the bottom of this free agency spending list.

Last offseason, however, we saw a more aggressive approach. This included signing Daniel Jones and spending fairly big on Charvarius Ward and Cam Bynum.

Ballard seemingly acknowledged that continuing down that path was going to be the plan this offseason.

The Colts are positioned relatively well from a salary cap standpoint to do so as well.
