WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event Preview, Odds And Start Time For John Cena’s Last Match

WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event emanates from the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. on December 13, 2025. Upwards of 17,000 fans will attend the once-in-a-lifetime broadcast signaling the end of an era from one of WWE’s greatest superstars of all time.

Coming off a loss to Dominik Mysterio at Survivor Series in his penultimate match, Cena will face Gunther after the Ring General won Cena’s Last Time is Now tournament on SmackDown. To further the theme of Cena’s time being up and the future being now, SNME will feature NXT/TNA stars Sol Ruca, Je’Von Evans, Leon Slater and NXT champion Oba Femi who will take on Cody Rhodes after regaining the NXT Title at Deadline.

Cena’s last match will be one of the most-viewed broadcasts of 2025, but with the show airing exclusively on Peacock, viewership and ratings data will be estimates.

John Cena’s Final Match

John Cena’s whirlwind retirement tour wraps up in mid-December at the Capital One Arena. Cena’s retirement has been defined by insane merch sales, high ratings and also several bumps in the road. The most notable hiccup featured John Cena’s long-awaited heel turn, which was perfectly executed before being fumbled from a booking standpoint.

Cena promptly turned face at SummerSlam after the ill-fated run struggled from a lack of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Travis Scott, who were catalysts for Cena’s original turn at Elimination Chamber. Babyface Cena has been a champion for WWE’s future, not just in his promos but also in his actions. Cena’s final title defense came against rising star Dominik Mysterio, who defeated Cena with help from Liv Morgan at Survivor Series.

MORE FOR YOU

Cena legitimately curated the card for Saturday Night’s Main Event, which will include rising stars from NXT and TNA. As of this writing, Cena will enter his final match as an underdog against dream-killer Gunther. If Cena had it his way, he would likely be the second legend to submit to Gunther at an SNME after Gunther slayed Goldberg in Goldberg’s hometown of Atlanta, Ga. on July 12. Win or lose, Cena will have an emotional sendoff and/or retirement ceremony after he wraps up a 20+ year career in the nation’s capital. Cena’s podcast tour has featured poignant conversations about Vince McMahon whom Cena still thinks highly of.

“I never wanted Vince to go, because I love him and I know how much he loves the business,” said Cena on “The Bill Simmons Podcast (h/t Cagesideseats.com.)”

“But he taught me, like, ‘We’re all going to go.’ All of us. And he taught me that not only through saying, through his actions. I was there the day he fired Stone Cold. Missed a date, got to go. His biggest attraction. ‘I got to let people know this isn’t okay.’ So, things happen. ‘We got to let people know this isn’t okay. It’s time for you to go.’”

WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event Predictions And Winners

Gunther Vs. John Cena

Gunther is not the future of WWE, he is the here and now. Gunther is young enough, however, to where a win over Cena will be another feather in his cap as the ultimate final botch.

But after enjoying a historic undefeated streak and Intercontinental Championship run—not to mention retiring Goldberg—Gunther’s belt notches have run into the law of diminishing marginal returns. Gunther would not be hurt by a loss to Cena at all. And whether or not Cena wants Gunther to go over, fans who paid high ticket prices will want to see John Cena go out on a positive note. Cena vs. Gunther is likely to not be the main event, meaning a John Cena loss could set a sad tone for the rest of the show.

Winner | John Cena

Oba Femi vs. Cody Rhodes

Oba Femi regained the WWE NXT Championship last week on NXT. As a result, he faces Cody Rhodes at Saturday Night’s Main Event as WWE’s present meets its future. If the theme for the night is Cena handpicking up-and-coming talent, then boy would it make him look foolish if they all go out there and lose on a John Cena card.

WWE is very status quo at the moment, and Rhodes is a strong favorite in this match. But with so many eyeballs on a man who is the future of WWE, Oba Femi would be a made man with a win over Cody right out of the gate. Rhodes demanded Nick Aldis lift Drew McIntyre’s suspension last week on SmackDown. I think that’s exactly what will happen en route to Drew costing Cody his showcase match against Oba Femi.

Winner | Oba Femi

AJ Styles and Dragon Lee vs. Leon Slater And Je’Von Evans

The unnamed superteam of AJ Styles and Dragon Lee has set WWE’s tag team division on fire in short order. Now, they draw a flashy team in its own right as Iron Survivor winner Je’Von Evans reforms his high-flying duo with Leon Slater. Styles and Lee have had mostly great Raw matches, and on-paper, Styles and Lee vs. Stater and Evans will be Internet Wrestling Catnip. I also see this being one of the rare matches where the young side of the match comes up short.

Winners | AJ Styles and Dragon Lee

Bayley vs. Sol Ruca

Bayley has followed John Cena’s cues by giving back to the wrestling community. This past weekend she hosted a private seminar for up-and-coming wrestlers, and now she draws popular NXT star—and NXT women’s North American champion—Sol Ruca.

Sol is in the midst of a frienemy storyline alongside BFF (Best Friend For Now) Zaria. Zaria is almost guaranteed to turn on Sol, but I don’t think that plays out on SNME. Instead, I think Sol Ruca scores a meaningful upset over future Hall of Famer Bayley, who has had no problems putting over young talent in the past including current tag team partner Lyra Valkyria.

Winner | Sol Ruca
