Sports briefs: Soldotna hockey, wrestling teams secure wins at weekend tournaments

SoHi’s wrestling and hockey teams did well in tournaments around the Kenai Peninsula over the weekend. The hockey team won the End of the Road Shootout tournament in Homer and the wrestling team saw several individuals win their weight classes during the Robin Hervey and King of the Mountain tournaments.

End of the Road Shootout hockey tournament

The SoHi varsity hockey team traveled to Homer last weekend to play against the Houston Hawks, Colony Knights and Kenai Bears during the End of the Road Shootout conference tournament at the Kevin Bell Arena. The competitive tournament held numerous shootouts across three days of competition.

The Stars’ first opponent was Houston on Thursday afternoon. The two teams tied 2-2, moving into overtime. The Stars eventually beat the Hawks by one point in a shootout.

On Friday afternoon, the Stars went up against the Colony Knights, winning 3-1. Saturday afternoon saw the last match of the weekend, pitting the Stars against the Kenai Bears. The Stars won 1-0.

The varsity and junior varsity teams will both face off against Juneau and Palmer Dec. 3-5 at the Soldotna Regional Sports complex. For the team’s entire schedule, visit SoHi’s athletics page.

The hosting Homer hockey team lost to Colony 0-5, to Kodiak in a shootout 3-4 and to Houston 0-7. The Mariners are 0-5 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Homer hockey head coach Spencer Warren said in a text message Tuesday that the Mariners “played great hockey” during the weekend.

“Despite what the scores show for the first and last game, you had to be there to see it,” he wrote. “The kids really showed that Homer is becoming a competitive team. We had a nail-biter of a game against Kodiak and tied the game up with 30 seconds left in the third period. It wasn’t until the sudden death round of the shootout that we lost.”

Warren said that Homer’s hockey program is “a night a day difference” after nearly a full rebuild of the program, and that the Mariners “are only getting better.”

“For being a very young team made mostly of freshmen and sophomores, the kids showed a lot of grit and determination this weekend, and I’m very proud of them,” he wrote. “We are getting ready for the next stretch of home games in a couple weeks.”

Homer will host Tri-Valley Dec. 4-5.

JV and varsity wrestling tournaments

The SoHi varsity wrestling team traveled to Kodiak to compete in the Robin Hervey individual tournament last weekend. Eleven wrestlers won their weight classes. Rodney McNeel, who wrestles at 215 pounds, and Katara Lepule, 165, were named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestlers.
