CBS Sports ties coaching candidate to a potential Michigan State football opening
There is no secret in the college football world, Michigan State has a decision to make about head football coach Jonathan Smith and his job security in East Lansing. Now, that conversation has made it to the national media.
When addressing Pat Fitzgerald, and the fact that he interviewed with Arkansas, the trio mentioned Michigan State and the logic behind a pairing between the two.
“If Michigan State were to open this cycle — which many industry sources consider increasingly likely even with a hefty buyout for Jonathan Smith — Fitzgerald would be a name that would make sense as a candidate.”
Fitzgerald, who went 110-101 in a 17 year career with Northwestern, is looking to get back into coaching. Obviously, his ties to the Midwest and Big Ten has him linked to a potential MSU opening, and many think it could be a match made in heaven.
Smith is still employed, as of now, but if a move is made to move on from the second year head coach, Fitzgerald is certainly a name that is worth monitoring heavily.
