Nov. 15—KAMIAH — Logos quarterback Baxter Covington didn’t have any doubts about what his team was capable of even though his last trip to Kamiah didn’t go his way.
With that loss in the past, and glory on the horizon, Covington took the Knights’ first offensive snap from scrimmage and raced 69 yards into the end zone for Logos’ first points 19 seconds into an Idaho Class 2A semifinals football game at Kamiah.

“I love it when we score on the first play,” Covington said. “It’s super demoralizing for the other team. And yeah, I just trusted my boys.”
Covington’s four touchdowns and the Knights’ nearly 400 yards rushing boosted Logos to a 44-18 win over Kamiah on Friday.
With the win, Logos (9-2) will face Kendrick (11-0) in the 2A state championship next week.
A second chance
The last time Logos of Moscow visited Kamiah (9-2), the Knights were in “a bit of quarterback controversy,” as Logos coach Nick Holloway put it.
Logos fell to Kamiah by two points in that October matchup.

That was the last regular-season game that Covington played QB, switching to wide receiver after that game before moving back to quarterback in the postseason.
“He was a little immature (in the last Kamiah game), and so today, he showed a lot of mental maturity,” Holloway said of his quarterback. “He grew up more, and it’s cool to see over the course of season, but he’s also one of those guys that he’s such a weapon (that) you can put him almost anywhere.”
One month after that first Kamiah game, Covington was back under center for the Knights, leading Logos to a quarterfinal win over Hagerman last week and a state semifinal win over the Kubs on Friday.
Covington wasn’t the only Knight who showed out.

Running back Honour Mallery gained more than 100 all-purpose yards and three total touchdowns, Zane Holloway grabbed an interception and defensive tackle Peter Story and his fellow defensive linemen were a force, racking up several sacks and hard hits.
Story said the Knights’ focus on swarming to the ball is paying off.
“We figured it out, and we’re all clicking,” Story said. “And I just hope Kendrick’s ready for us to swarm.”
A Landmark year for Kamiah
Suffering just their second loss of the season may have stung, but the Kubs did not leave their home field without some hardware. The Kubs earned third place in Idaho’s 2A classification in Kamiah coach Garrison Bretz’s first year at the helm.

“It’s big because nobody thought we could do it. And in the back of our minds, we thought we could,” Bretz said. “We knew we had a lot of work we had to do. And the kids put the work in, and they kept grinding. Didn’t stop.”
While the Kubs are capable of beating Logos, it was the Knights who had the upper hand from the first play from scrimmage.
“They just came out, and they played more physically than we did,” Bretz said of Logos. “They hit us in the mouth from the get-go, and they didn’t stop till the end. Our kids fought. They didn’t give up. But sometimes it’s too much to handle.”
Junior Lawson Landmark, playing his first year at quarterback after the graduation of accomplished Kamiah athlete David Kludt, was a big part of the Kubs’ unrelenting nature.

Landmark completed 10 passes in the second half alone, with three touchdowns.
The Kubs finished strong with an 18-0 run in the second half, including a 60-yard catch-and-run from Damian Ochoa that made it 44-18 with 2:09 left.
“He did a tremendous job,” Bretz said of Landmark. “He’s a baller, he’s a stud, and I’m excited to have him back next year for sure.”
Knights vs. Tigers
It’s become a bit of a classic these past two years.
The upstart Logos Knights from the city of Moscow against the impenetrable, dynamic, four-straight-state-championship-winning Kendrick Tigers.

Kendrick ended both Kamiah and Logos’ seasons last year, but it was the Knights who were the lone team to pierce the Tigers’ armour of perfection. Logos broke Kendrick’s three-year win streak last season in the regular season, but the Tigers got revenge in the state semifinals.
This year, Logos led Kendrick at halftime, but it was the Tigers who stole the show with the runaway victory by the time the bell rang.
Now, the two Whitepine League foes will face off again for the ultimate bragging rights of a State championship next week.

The key for the Knights against the Tigers?
“We need to maintain our standard,” Holloway said. “And then we need to finish better. We didn’t finish this game well, so it’s a championship game. Finish. Play the whole game.”
While Logos had sent a bulk of their substitutes into the game midway through the third quarter, Holloway didn’t reference that fact when assessing the Knights’ second half.
“Second half (vs. Kendrick) we did not play to our standards,” Mallery said.
