Russell Wilson wants New York Giants to 'create winning habits' every day

The New York Giants defeated the Buffalo Bills in their first preseason game of 2025. It was a sound victory, 34-25, and the Giants looked better than they have in a long time. Part of that is because they’ve nailed down their quarterback room, led by veteran Russell Wilson.

All four quarterbacks led scoring drives, and each pushed the ball down the field. It’s something Wilson would like to see continue, but warns the players must remain even-keeled.

“Well, I think the first thing is not to be too high, not be too low,” he told reporters after the game. “Just remaining focused on the work, remaining focused on the progress, incremental gains, and understanding that we’re doing this thing together, offensively, defensively, special teams.

“Winning is a habit, and we want to create winning habits not just on Sundays or Saturdays like today, but it’s the process of winning that you have to enjoy. And I think when you love practice and you love it and you compete at as high of a level as we do every day and get after every day, it makes the games that much more simple.”

Simplifying the game makes it easier for the players to trust their instincts; they can anticipate outcomes, where the ball might be going, and make adjustments if needed. All of those things happen in split seconds — it’s no longer an actual thought in their heads because their bodies are already moving, it’s instinct.

Instinct that is instilled during practice and building relationships with teammates.

“That’s the good thing about playing the game of football,” Wilson continued. “It’s one of those things that you have to recreate every day and that mentality. So we’re on the journey of that, and that’s what we’re looking forward to.”

The Giants haven’t made winning a habit in far too long, something Wilson wants to change. It’s starting well in the preseason, but we’ll see if they can carry it through the 18-week regular season slate.
