The New York Giants thought they got out of Buffalo on Saturday with not only a big victory but with few, if any, injuries.
On Sunday, during his Zoom press conference with reporters, head coach Brian Daboll revealed that slot cornerback Dru Phillips was injured early in the Giants’ 34-25 win over the Bills and did not return. He was replaced by Nic Jones.
“Dru wasn’t able to go, so (Jones) went in,” Daboll said. “Just couldn’t finish. It falls in line with all the other injured guys right now.”
Daboll did not indicate the type of injury Phillips incurred or if he would miss any time. The Giants will participate in two joint practices with the New York Jets this week before playing them at MetLife Stadium on Saturday night.
Phillips is expected to be a key cog in the Giants’ secondary this season and has played well in camp drills and scrimmages.
Whatever the injury is, it didn’t prevent him from participating in a postgame photo session with some other University of Kentucky Wildcat alums.
Phillips didn’t appear to be in any pain after the game.
Given the Giants’ limited depth at cornerback, the hope is Phillips can return by Week 1.
