Broncos QB Bo Nix to host summer throwing sessions with teammates: 'It helps'

Denver Broncos second-year quarterback Bo Nix plans to get together with teammates this summer for player-organized practice sessions ahead of training camp.

“Before camp, I know Bo is doing something for us,” running back J.K. Dobbins said last week. “We’re going to all get together, and it’s going to be good. It’s going to be great. Hopefully, we build a relationship, too.”

Broncos players also worked out in Texas last year. Speaking after the team wrapped up mandatory minicamp last Thursday, offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi said the throwing sessions are helpful for the players.

“It helps, it always helps, especially a young quarterback, to kind of be in charge of those sessions,” Lombardi said. “It helps him grow as a leader. The more those guys can throw, the more they can learn each other’s body language, and the quarterbacks can learn to throw to the different receivers because each guy’s a little bit different.

“And I think it helps with bonding a lot. Those guys get out there, they get a couple hours work in the morning, then they go play golf and do whatever they do. It certainly helps with team bonding and chemistry and cohesion.”

Peyton Manning took teammates to Duke for offseason workouts during his time in Denver.

“I think most teams do it,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said. “Drew [Brees] would have them come to San Diego. These guys will go work out for three days. I think it’s just spending time together, and I don’t think it’s unusual. That is their time.”

Players are allowed to work out and practice together on their own during the offseason, but the CBA does not allow coaches to participate at this time of year. So the workouts will be players-only sessions, with Nix leading the way.
