Families looking for a little more flexibility in their EV choices will soon have another option as Tesla is preparing to bring back the seven-seat Model Y. The reintroduction should, at least in theory, broaden the appeal of the updated Juniper model. And the timing matters, because Tesla is currently struggling with sluggish demand in many major markets and is fighting to retain its share of the EV market.
The seven-seat setup isn’t new to the Model Y, but it’s been more of a recurring guest star than a permanent fixture. First offered in 2021 in the original Model Y, it vanished the following year before returning briefly in 2024. Tesla hasn’t released images of the new configuration just yet. The photo you see above is from the previous Model Y.
News of the updated version only surfaced after the company reportedly sent out an email describing the model as offering “seating for up to seven and enough room for everyone’s gear”, as seen in a tweet shared by user DennisCW, among others.

Given that dimensions remain unchanged, the Model Y Juniper’s sloping roofline and compact footprint make it a stretch to call the third row “spacious.” Compared to larger electric SUVs like the Hyundai Ioniq 9 and Kia EV9, there’s less headroom and legroom to go around. It almost certainly won’t be spacious enough for adults and will be best suited for small children.
That said, if you’ve got a large family or just spend a lot of weekends shuttling small humans to soccer practice, a seven-seat Model Y could still make a lot of sense.
The rear seats originally offered on the Model Y could each fold down flat, ensuring they didn’t rob too much cargo space. Tesla will likely look to do the same with the third row on the updated model.

Pricing Remains A Mystery
Tesla hasn’t shared pricing details yet, but if past options are anything to go by, expect the extra seats to add a couple thousand dollars to the MSRP.
A Faster Model Y Also in the Works
The seven-seat version of the Model Y isn’t the only new variant that’s just around the corner. Tesla is hard at work developing the new Model Y Performance. It will likely feature the same dual-motor powertrain as the Model 3 Performance, punching out 510 hp and 554 lb-ft of torque. It should be able to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in around 3.2 or 3.3 seconds and offer around 290 miles of range.
