The New York Giants signed free agent safety Jevon Holland this offseason to a three-year, $45.3 million deal of which $30.3 million is guaranteed.
Some experts saw the move as a gamble, while others deemed it a possible coup for Big Blue. Holland is still just 25 years old and possesses the size many teams desire in a safety at 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds.
It’s true that Holland has underachieved at times and has never received league-wide honors, something scouts had predicted for him when he was drafted 36th overall out of Oregon in the 2021 NFL draft by the Miami Dolphins.
But it is also true that he may not have reached his potential as of yet.
NFL Films senior producer Greg Cosell is in the camp of the glass-half-full crew when it comes to Holland. He recently gave the safety a glowing review on Ross Tucker’s podcast.
Holland is in a new defense now. The Dolphins may not have been a fit for him. Time will tell on that. The Giants are hoping to keep him healthy and aim for him to be more consistent. He has shown flashes of stardom so far in his career.
Holland has been rated a top-10 safety by several sources this offseason. He is seen as an “X factor” for the Giants’ defense this year.
“Miami let Holland walk in free agency after he posted a career-low 57.1 coverage grade in 2024. However, his 91.3 coverage grade since 2021 still ranks tied for fifth among qualified safeties, highlighting his overall consistency before last season,” wrote PFF’s Dalton Wasserman.
“Holland thrives as a deep-roaming free safety in single-high coverages, a promising fit under new defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, whose defense ranked sixth in single-high usage during the 2024 regular season.”
Holland could end up being a solid fit here for Bowen and the Giants. Throw in his leadership qualities and now one can see how this addition makes a to of sense.
