ATP Stuttgart Day 2 Predictions Including Learner Tien vs Yoshihito Nishioka
First-round action at the ATP Stuttgart Open concludes with eight matches on day two. There should be plenty of entertaining tennis for the fans to enjoy Germany and, as ever, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the slate, including Alex Michelsen vs Gael Monfils. But who will reach the second round?
ATP Stuttgart Day 2 Predictions
Fabio Fognini vs Corentin Moutet
Head-to-head: first meeting
It’s one of those matches that has chaos written all over it. Fabio Fognini is a former champion in Stuttgart. But that was a decade ago, at a time when the tournament was held on clay courts. It’s unlikely that the Italian will play beyond this season, with a decision on his retirement imminent. Wins have been scarce this year (Fognini has not won a main draw match at the Tour level in 2025). Corentin Moutet has enjoyed a more productive season with 14 wins across all surfaces and will thrive sliding around the freshly cut grass.
Yannick Hanfmann vs Marton Fucsovics
Head-to-head: Hanfmann 1-1 Fucsovics
The decision not to award Yannick Hanfmann a wildcard was surprising, but he successfully navigated the qualifying route with two solid straight sets wins. Marton Fucsovics, who is more accomplished than the German on grass, escaped with a couple of three-set wins. Hanfmann doesn’t possess a grass-court game in the traditional sense, but he can make matches uncomfortable on any surface when his game is clicking. And he’s beaten the Hungarian in this tournament in the past. This could be a minor upset in the offing.
Prediction: Hanfmann in 3
Damir Dzumhur vs Pierre-Hugues Herbert
Head-to-head: Dzumhur 2-1 Herbert
Pierre-Hugues Herbert’s game translate very well on grass. He is one of the few serve-and-volley artists remaining. At first glance, it’s quite shocking that he’s never won a main draw match in Stuttgart in three previous tries. But he’s received some tough draws. This one feels different as he is favoured to progress against a clay-court specialist. This is a matchup where the surface matters in every sense and Herbert should comfortably have the edge.
Learner Tien vs Yoshihito Nishioka
Head-to-head: first meeting
This will be Learner Tien’s debut on grass courts. It’s a surface that can be less forgiving to the inexperienced. However, Tien can quickly adapt. He’s coming off a breakout first half of the season where he played at an exceptionally high level. Yoshihito Nishioka is more seasoned with plenty of experience. But the Japanese lefty is far from a natural on grass courts. And worryingly, he’s retired in three of his last four tournaments.
