‘Tom was always the champ’: Fans react to Tom Aspinall declaring Jon Jones retired
Fans are getting tired of waiting around for Jon Jones.
For over a year, the MMA world has been waiting on a possible unification bout between UFC heavyweight champion Jones and interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall. Unfortunately, that bout seems no closer to being booked, with Jones completely unbothered by the growing backlash against him and teasing a possible retirement. It’s especially unfortunate for Aspinall, who has not fought since last July while he’s waited for Jones. And now, he’s done waiting.
On Monday, Aspinall announced that he was tired of being held hostage by the whims of Jones, said Jones had retired from the sport, and declared himself the undisputed heavyweight champion. Aspinall also said he was ready to get the division moving again and had a fight date that would be announced soon.
Whether or not any of this is true remains to be seen, but regardless of the truth of the matter, it does seem to be what the fans want at this point, with a growing number of them happy to let Jones “live his best life” and move on from the superfight.
