Weather maps show where UK will be coldest this week amid -8C forecast

The UK is set to experience more snow this week as temperatures are forecast to plunge as low as -8C.

The Met Office said parts of Scotland will fall eight below freezing on Tuesday morning, with much of northern England also experiencing below zero temperatures.

There will be widespread frost across the UK and sleet and snow is forecast in Scotland and the North East of England, as cold Arctic air blasts in.

It marks a complete turnaround in the weather following a particularly mild weekend that saw temperatures reach more than 16C in some places on Sunday.

By Wednesday, however, the UK will see a return to milder conditions because of warm Atlantic air moving northwards.

Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna said: “Monday night is probably the coldest night – we should get to -8C in one or two spots in Scotland, more likely around high ground, where we’ve got a snow line.

“Then on Tuesday night, possibly minus 3C in Scotland. By Tuesday morning, parts of England could get down to -2C or -3C.”

The warmest place in the UK on Sunday was Cardiff in Wales, where temperatures reached 16.4C because of winds brining milder air from the south and south west.

“That’s about five degrees above average – it should be about 10C to 12C that time of year,” said Petagna.
