Mikaela Shiffrin has abrasion after crash in World Cup giant slalom
STIFEL Killington World Cup – Women’s Giant Slalom
Mikaela Shiffrin suffered an abrasion near her hip and said there was “not really too much cause for concern” after crashing at an Alpine skiing World Cup giant slalom in Killington, Vermont, on Saturday.
“Wishing the best of luck to my teammates tomorrow!!” Shiffrin posted, referencing a World Cup slalom in Killington scheduled for Sunday. “I’ll be cheering from the sidelines on this one.”
Shiffrin, the first-run leader in Saturday’s race, was about 12 seconds from the finish line of her second and final run when she slipped coming around a gate, slid through a gate, somersaulted, had one ski detach and spun around before sliding into safety netting at the side boundary of the course.
About 20 minutes after the crash, Shiffrin was transported off the course, lying on her back in a sled. She briefly waved her left arm in front of a cheering crowd.
Sara Hector of Sweden won the race. Next weekend’s women’s World Cup GS races originally scheduled for Tremblant, Canada, were canceled earlier Saturday due to lack of snow.
As of now, the next scheduled women’s World Cup stop is in Beaver Creek, Colorado, for a downhill and super-G on Dec. 14-15. Shiffrin went into the season planning to race super-Gs and not downhills. There is no word yet on the possibility of Shiffrin racing the Beaver Creek super-G after Saturday’s crash.
Quick update. Thank you for your cheers and support. Wishing the best of luck to my teammates tomorrow!! I’ll be cheering from the sidelines on this one.❤️ pic.twitter.com/5siYwSFxMT
