In the latest episode of Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast that dropped on Thursday, he was joined by longtime actress and multi-hyphenate Keke Palmer and as you can expect—hilarity ensued.
Over the course of nearly two hours, Sharpe and Palmer talked about a variety of topics including the latter’s long (and still ongoing) career in Hollywood, her new book “Master of Me: The Secret to Controlling Your Narrative,” being a mom and more. But as is usually the case when it comes to anything Palmer is involved in, the conversation was riddled with countless funny and surprising moments. And because we know you may not have two hours to sit down and watch it—we’ve hit on some of the highlights for you so you don’t have to.

Keke Palmer Almost Starred in “Are We There Yet?”
One of the most surprising moments came when Palmer detailed that she almost starred in Ice Cube’s most popular films, “Are We There Yet?” The reason why she didn’t was because she didn’t nail her audition.

“I wanted to be in that movie too bad…and I knew when I did the audition, it just wasn’t right,” she explained. “Something wasn’t right about it, I knew it didn’t go well. And I was really sad.”
Thankfully, her mom Sharon was there to help her through it and encouraged her that she may not have been ready but she had to keep going.

Keke Palmer Became a Millionaire at 12-Years-Old
In speaking about how her parents sacrificed their jobs and security to help her realize her acting dreams, Palmer detailed how at 12-years-old, after doing “Akeelah and the Bee,” she became a millionaire—but making all that money came at a cost at knowing she was the breadwinner of her family. She later detailed how folks in Hollywood tried to pry her away from her parents and their guidance under the guise of trying to take her career further. But ultimately, she didn’t listen. She also asserted that sacrifices aside, she’d make the same decisions all over again if it meant being able to be of service to her loved ones.

“How I feel about it—what’s mine is theirs and what’s theirs is mine. And I would give up and sacrifice 20 more years of my life working in this industry so I could provide and we could have the business we have today, ” she said.

Detailing how she hadn’t really spoken much to him up until that point as he was “a man of few words,” Palmer recalled going into a room with him and the wise words he shared that she always kept with her.
“I want you to know that you’re growing into a young woman and a lot of times the way that people see you, the way that these men see you onset—it’s not the way that you see yourself,” she said. “So protect yourself, be careful and don’t let them take advantage of you. Know who you are and know what you have so that people can’t use it against you.”
