Denzel Washington is considered one of the greatest actors of all time. Many of his films are thought of as classics. However, like many big movie stars, he has a few forgettable titles on his resume. In his typical honest style, the Oscar winner didn’t hold back in describing some of these projects.
“After ‘Malcolm X’ I made some real clunkers,” he told The Times. “Look them up — I won’t say their names. They are all in the 1990s.”

The “Gladiator II” star explained, “In life, you learn, earn and then you return — as in give back.” That period in his life was about supporting his family and growing his career. This is why his ‘90s lineup includes the 1995 sci-fi thriller “Virtuosity,” which currently has 32 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, 1998 action drama “The Siege,” which is at 44 percent, and crime procedural “The Bone Collector, which stands at 29 percent.

“In that era I was earning… With a great agent, my career built into making money, and so the earning kicked in and then life also kicked in, with bills, four kids, and a house,” Washington said.

Of course, we don’t care about any of his “clunkers.” We still consider the two-time Oscar winner and three-time Golden Globe Award winner as one of the greatest artists ever. Though, in a hilarious turn of events, the acting icon isn’t nearly as obsessed with movies as we are. He admitted that he actually watches “very few films,” especially his own.
“I watch it so I know what I’m talking about,” he said. “But I haven’t watched any film from my past from start to finish, not even ‘Malcolm X.’ All you see is what you did wrong. Also, why would you do it anyway?”
When his kids, John David Washington and Olivia Washington, decided to follow in their father’s footsteps, he advised them to focus on working in the theater.

“I told them they have to get on the stage because that’s where you learn to act,” he said. “You don’t learn to act on TV. You don’t learn to act in movies. You learn to act on stage. TV and films are a director’s medium — where they are in control.”
Up next, Denzel Washington can be seen in “Gladiator II,” which storms into theaters Nov. 22. He’s also producing “The Piano Lesson,” which is directed by his other son, Malcolm Washington, and stars John David. It’s set to premiere on Netflix Nov. 22.
