Keith Lee Speaks About His Sushi ‘Moving’ During a Review and the Disastrous Aftermath

Keith Lee’s love of sushi just backfired on him.

Last week, the humble food critic visited FOB Sushi, a place he said did sushi “in the most unique way” that he’s ever seen in his entire life. If you follow Lee closely, you know he has a deep admiration for the Japanese dish, reviewing restaurants that serve it all over the country.

During the review, as Lee was holding the food up to the camera and tasting it, fans noticed something off about one of the servings.

In the following days, this particular review went viral for all of the wrong reasons, as multiple videos from fans pointed out that one of the servings of sushi Lee ate appeared to have a parasitic “worm” on it that moved just moments before he put it in his mouth.

Posts like the above one were spread all over TikTok, leading to FOB Sushi releasing a statement on Instagram, attempting to explain away the “worm” appearing on Lee’s food.

“Regarding the video, the movement observed in the fish may result from natural elasticity or the pressure of chopsticks when applied to its structure,” the statement read. “We want to assure our customers that this is not indicative of worms or any health concerns.”

But for many, those words rang hollow, especially for Lee, who posted a video on Monday to respond to the “worm” claims.

Lee made it clear that he was fine and that he didn’t notice anything moving on his food until someone else pointed it out.

He later added that he was addressing the situation because he learned that someone who went to the same restaurant a day after he did was recently hospitalized. Lee also disagreed with the statement that FOB released.

“For the restaurant to post a statement and indicate that me holding a sushi or me holding a chopstick a certain way is why the sushi moved, I personally don’t agree with it,” he asserted. “I’ve had sushi a thousand times, and held sushi a thousand different ways and never once I have seen sushi behave in that way. That’s not me saying it was a worm or it was a parasite, I’m just saying it was nothing that I did on my end. I literally was just eating as a customer.”

This has led FOB Sushi to close down their locations in Seattle and Bellevue, saying in an Instagram post, “In response to recent food safety concerns, we have decided to close our FOB Sushi location in Seattle and Bellevue until further notice.”

Did the sushi Lee eat have a worm or parasite on it? We’ll likely never know. But this recent incident may lead to many taking a break from eating at their favorite sushi restaurant for a while.
