Everything Black Trump Supporters Voted For That Probably Won’t Help Them

Here we are, booming head on into a second presidency under Donald J. Trump. Polls show thirteen percent of Black voters casted their ballots on the Republican primary candidate. However, the things he promises to do in office are quite contrary to what can actually benefit Black people.

Here are just a few of them:

Controversial Take on Education

One of the most criticized moves Trump promised to make once in office again is to shut down the Department of Education. His reasoning is that the agency’s budget is too big and filled with employees “who hate our children.” As a result of closing down the department, K-12 Black public school students will have access to even less funding than they already do.

On the higher education level, Black college students could lose protections from racial discrimination which they are entitled to under the DOE. They may also lose access to federal grants and loan borrowing. The Education Data Initiative reported 66 percent of Black students utilize student loans and are most likely to receive federal ones.

White Reparations?!

Going off his proposals for education, Trump also promised (as he had for a while) to eliminate the education of critical race theory, gender studies and other political topics from the classroom. His war on anti-wokeness is expected to be full throttle, encouraging states to implement policies to allow parents to control what their kids learn and don’t learn including topics like slavery and the roots of institutionalized racism.

Due to the horrors of teaching the true history of this nation and offering equity to Black folks, Trump also promised to offer restitution… but to white people. In a resurfaced 2023 video, he said part of his woke war was to give an endowment to white people who were “hurt” by DEI policies which he considers a form of anti-white discrimination.

Economic Policies

It doesn’t stop there. Many Black people voted for Trump in hopes of inflation going down and grocery prices settling back to normal. For decades, Black people have been at the top of the list on the nation’s consumerism reports. According to McKinsey & Company, Black consumers in the U.S. are expected to expand to $1.7 trillion in consumption overall by 2030. By contrast, we were at a reported $910 billion in consumption back in 2019.

One of Trump’s promises for office is to increase import tariffs by 10 to 20 percent. However, retailers are already preparing for the price of goods to spike. Lowe’s and Walmart were the latest to have issued warnings to customers about expected price increases on goods imported from places like China, per CNBC.

Tax Cuts

Additionally, Trump’s plans of tax cuts along with the tariffs could add up to $15 trillion to the nation’s debt over the next decade as well as trigger a tax increase for every income class except the top 5 percent of America’s highest paid workers, according to an analysis by The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget and the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy.

Among other policies like endorsing state abortion bans which will affect Black womens’ access to healthcare or promises of police immunity which could increase police brutality cases, it doesn’t look like Black Trump voters will be supported by what he plans to do in office.

Though, they still have four years to find out.
