If you’re Denzel Washington, with a resume loaded with iconic roles and the industry’s highest honors, you’re used to people being awestruck by your mere presence.
But during an appearance at the First Jurisdiction 103rd Holy Convocation at the Kelly Lake Church of God in Christ in New York, Washington was the one in awe when he had a touching reunion with his former Sunday school teacher.

“Lord, I remember you,” Washington said in a video posted to @blackchurchtok on Instagram with the caption ’Denzel Washington Went Back to His Roots.’ “Hallelujah, oh Lord. I haven’t seen you in 65 years. I see you now. It is good to be seen by you. Give me a quick lesson now.”

And without hesitation, Mother Ruby Scott gave Washington the word.
“Faith makes everything possible, but love gives you strength to do it,” she replied.

Washington then kissed her on both cheeks before making his way back to his seat.

The comments were flooded with fans who loved seeing Washington, whose father, Rev. Denzel H. Washington Sr., was a Pentecostal minister, being taken back to Sunday school.
“Nothing like a teacher who makes an impact,” wrote one person.
“Yep he was singing ‘I know it was the blood’ in Equalizer 😂,” wrote another, referencing the gospel song his character Robert McCall sang in The Equalizer 3.

But the winning comment has to be this one that summed up the beautiful reunion in the most perfect way.
“What I love about this – most people on the planet are in awe when they see Denzel, but here’s a woman that Denzel is in awe to see! A beautiful moment.”
