Super Saturday on tap: Team USA men’s hoops takes center stage

The penultimate day of the 2024 Paris Olympics is loaded.

From Team USA’s gold medal men’s basketball game against Victor Wembanyama and France, to the USWNT’s first shot at a gold medal in more than a decade to even more track and field finals, here’s what we’re looking forward to most on Saturday in Paris.

After a wild comeback win over Serbia in the semifinals, Team USA will now have a chance to compete for a fifth consecutive gold medal on Saturday.

The United States will take on France in the men’s basketball final on Saturday afternoon in Paris. Victor Wembanyama and France rolled over Germany in the semifinals to make it to a second straight gold medal game. While the Americans haven’t been as dominant as many expected — and it took a 36-point night from Stephen Curry to even get past Serbia — Team USA has won gold in four straight Games dating back to 2008.

After more than a decade of coming up short, the United States women’s national soccer team will take on Brazil in the gold medal match on Saturday afternoon. The Americans, led by the trio of Sophia Smith, Trinity Rodman and Mallory Swanson, can pick up their first gold medal since the 2012 Olympics in London on Saturday with a victory. They beat Germany in the semifinals after Smith scored a goal in extra time in the semifinals.

Brazil edged out France in the quarterfinals and then rolled over Spain to earn their spot in the finals. They’ll also get star Marta back after she was suspended for the last two games due to a red card in the group stage.

The final round of the women’s golf competition is here, and we’ve got a battle at the top of the leaderboard.

Australia’s Lydia Ko and Switzerland’s Morgane Metraux will start the day tied for the lead at 9-under, which gives them a two shot lead over the rest of the field. American Rose Zhang and Japan’s Miyu Yamashita will start at 7-under. Reigning gold medal winner Nelly Korda is within striking distance, too. She’ll start the day five shots back.

Another batch of track and field medals will be handed out on Saturday in France, and several Americans are right in the mix.

Bryce Hoppel will compete in the men’s 800 meter final, and Grace Stark will run in the 100-meter hurdles final. Stark won her semifinals heat in a time of 12.39 and beat out current world record holder Tobi Amusan to earn her spot in the final race.

Grant Fisher, who won bronze in the 10,000 meter run, will attempt to reach the podium in the 5,000 meter final. Both Nikki Hiltz and Elle Purrier St. Pierre are set to run in the women’s 1,500 meter final, too. Both the men’s and women’s team will close out the night in the 4×400 meter relay finals. Quincy Wilson, 16, participated on the men’s side in the qualifying round in what was his first race of the Games.

Medal events will start just after 1 p.m. ET on Saturday and can be seen on NBC.

Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yu-ting will compete in the gold medal boxing bout against Poland’s Julia Szeremeta on Saturday night in the women’s featherweight division. Though this final doesn’t feature any Americans, Yu-ting has been caught up in controversy throughout the games over misconceptions about her gender. She was one of two fighters in these Games who was disqualified from the world championships last year for allegedly failing an eligibility test. However, that test doesn’t factor into Olympic qualifying.

Though they were eliminated in a shootout in the semifinals, which ended a dominant stretch in the sport, the U.S. women’s water polo team will attempt to leave the Paris Olympics with a medal on Saturday.

The team will take on the Netherlands in the bronze medal match. Australia, which stunned the United States in the semifinals, will take on Spain in the gold medal match on Saturday. The Americans had won three straight gold medals in the event entering these Games.
