More than meets the eye: Valérie Belin, master of mirage – in pictures

With Engines, Belin returned to photographing objects after three years of human subjects. ‘Photographing car engines allowed me to make a return to a kind of physical innerness,’ she says. ‘Indeed, these objects show all the mechanical qualities of real organs which have been extracted from inside a body. As if, through reminiscence, I were offering the mechanical flesh of the first wrecked cars to the gaze, a little as if it were an exhibition of hunting trophies or victuals from a still life painting’
