But sometimes, it seems no matter how friendly you try to be it just doesn’t happen.

And one woman has revealed how her ‘boomer’ neighbour harassed her so much she just had to get revenge before leaving the property.

The term ‘boomer’  is short for ‘Baby boomers’, defined as people born from 1946 to 1964 during the mid-20th century baby boom.

After months of petty squabbles and harassment from her neighbour, the mum was delighted to finally move house.

Sharing her story on social media, she wrote: “We moved into a rental house in a neighborhood with our 3 kids, and the day after we moved in, our boomer neighbour (let’s call him Gene) knocked on our door after my husband left for work.

“When I answered the door, he skipped all pleasantries and introductions to gruffly inform me that the light switch in my family room closet needed to be turned off immediately and that it was my duty to ensure that it was kept off.

“Obviously puzzled by this demand, I asked what the switch was for.

“Gene said that the switch was for an exterior patio light that would shine into his bedroom at night and keep him awake…which was not acceptable.

“I figured the kids had turned it on while exploring the new house, so I assured him I’d turn it off. Without another word, he turned on his heel and went home.”

However, this wasn’t the end of her neighbour’s demands and during the 18-months of living there she said he would go out of his way to moan about anything the family was doing.

Neighbourhood Nightmares: Stories of disputes gone wrong

She revealed: “He would wait for my husband to leave, then come and complain and gripe at me about something we had done wrong.

“It was things like, our dogs would loudly sniff at the fence if he was outside, our sprinkler was spraying too high, our trash can was too close to his, etc. Our other neighbors adored us and our kids, so I really don’t think we were the problem.

The mum decided to stop answering the door to her neighbour as she had grown sick of his complaints, but it didn’t stop him.

He soon began to leave notes for the family and even found the mum on Facebook to message her there.

The Top Five Reasons Neighbours Squabble

One study by Compare the Market revealed the top reason British neighbour’s argue

  1. Broken fences – top of the board was broken fences and whose responsibility it was to fix it
  2. Parking: one of the leading drivers of neighbour disputes, with 54.1 per cent of people having issues with people parking in front of their house, parking bay or driveway
  3. Trees – complaints about a neighbour’s tree cracking your garden path was also common with nearly half of participants finding it frustrating
  4. Bin wars – outdoor bin etiquette continues to ignite the most furious debates between neighbours
  5. Nosy Neighbours – some people have their eyes and ears at the ready to have a peek causing problems for others

“My husband tried to talk to him and tell him to leave me alone, but he’d deny any wrongdoing,” she added.

“Reasoning with him was pointless so we made the decision to just ignore him the best we could.”

But when the couple finally found a new home, the mum and her partner decided to get some well-deserved revenge.

She revealed: “We were finally moving to a new place out of town and my husband went back to do the final walk-through of the house.

“When he left for the final time, he called me and to let me know he had a gift for me… the last thing he did before locking the door and leaving that house for good?

“Turning on the patio light switch in the closet knowing full well the landlord wouldn’t be there for final cleaning for 4 days.

“Best. Gift. Ever. I still laugh when I think about it.”

The post on Reddit went viral and plenty of people took to the comments to share their own stories of revenge on their nightmare neighbours.

One person wrote: “When I was a kid my neighbour used to accuse our dog of spying on her all the time! She would spray water at the fence to deter her, which didn’t work since she loved water.

“That ended when she sprayed the dog one and it was my granny there doing some gardening. It is surprising how many swears a wee pious Irish granny knows when she has had just her freshly set hair drenched.”
