Law Roach has done it again. The superhuman stylist to the stars is known for making Hollywood A-Listers like Zendaya, Megan Thee Stallion and Kerry Washington look their best on the red carpet. But his latest muse is someone you’ve probably never heard of.

The 2024 Met Gala was Mona Patel’s first appearance at the star-studded event dubbed the Super Bowl of Fashion. But judging by the social media reaction to her look, it definitely won’t be her last.

“SLAYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!” “The butterflies were the cherry on top, fits perfectly with the theme,” and “she ate all those who ate,” were part of the chorus of adoration for Patel’s stunning interpretation of this year’s “The Garden of Time” dress code for the celebration of the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”

According to British Vogue, Roach made the trek to India to help Patel put her look together, including her custom form-fitting gown designed by Dutch fashion designer Iris Van Herpen, whose work is known for being inspired by nature, and her stunning gold accessories. But what had everyone talking was the moving butterfly wings on her arms, an idea conceived by Patel and her friend, kinetic motion artist Casey Curran.

Who is Mona Patel?

Born in India, Mona Patel came to the United States after high school to attend Rutgers University. A self-described “serial entrepreneur,” Patel founded Couture for Cause, a non-profit designed to “bridge the worlds of haute fashion and philanthropy to empower women globally to become the master and muse of her own story.” For her Met Gala look, Patel told Vogue that she wanted to stay true to the theme while representing her Indian heritage.

“I wanted my debut look to be something that celebrates my heritage and also combines my love couture, and when I heard of the theme, Iris Van Herpen seemed like the obvious choice,” she said in an interview.
