Gazeboshop garden gazebo expert Samantha Richards shared several lawn care tips for people to be mindful of around less-than-ideal weather.

With so many tasks to tick off, it can be hard to know exactly what to do and when, but her useful tricks can help your garden be in the best shape possible.

TIME AND TEMP

If you find yourself up early around sunrise and wanting to get a head start on your grass, Richards explained why you shouldn’t and why you should actually avoid it.

“Not only to avoid any fallouts with your neighbors after you wake them up but doing so can cause damage to the grass by exposing it to disease and fungal infections,” she said.

When it comes to the best time of the day to mow your lawn, Richards said “the sweet spot is generally mid-morning from around 8 AM – 10 AM.”

Also, she said not to mow at all if temperatures consistently drop below 10 degrees Celsius or around 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

“When temperatures drop below this for a long period of time, your grass will enter its dormant stage and stop growing,” she explained.

DON’T MOW WHEN WET

No matter how desperately you might want to cut your grass, Richards advised not mowing your lawn when April showers first hit or immediately after.

“Mowing the lawn when it’s wet can result in an uneven cut because some of the grass will be weighed down by moisture,” she said.

So, these blades of grass will get missed by the lawn mower.

She added that your mower might struggle to cut wet grass, especially if it’s long after months of not being cut.

Richards warned that this can create hazardous risks like your mower overheating which can be a “costly mistake.”

“Ideally, wait until your grass is at least 95% dry before mowing,” she said.

As a rough guide, she added that this is typically between two and five hours after a light shower.

The gardening expert also had a useful tactic to see if your grass was ready to be mowed.

You can test to see if it’s dry by walking down the lawn in flip-flops.

“If your feet are damp by the end then hold off. When you go to mow your lawn, the grass blades should snap easily when bent,” she explained.

MOW WEEKLY

While the weather will determine what jobs you can do, Richards said your lawn should be in a “healthy condition” beforehand.

“To start off the rejuvenation process, you should be mowing your grass once a week at the start of April and then increase this to once every four days by the end of the month,” she recommended.

According to the expert, regularly mowing your lawn helps to promote healthy growth, prevent stress on the grass, and improve air circulation.

“Make sure you’re being mindful not to cut your grass below four centimeters in height as this will make your lawn more susceptible to drought – and at this point, weeds and moss will take hold,” she added.

Richards also said that if you’ve taken it upon yourself to lay a new lawn this spring, wait until the grass is at least five centimeters tall before mowing.
