Issy Hobson, 16, strikes at the death to all-but-end Arsenal’s WSL title hopes

Arsenal’s hopes of challenging Chelsea and Manchester City for the Women’s Super League title took a major hit, as 16-year-old Issy Hobson earned Everton a draw deep in stoppage time.

Jonas Eidevall’s side had to win to keep alive their faint hopes of competing for the WSL crown, but this 2-2 draw leaves them five points off the leaders, City, having played a game more.

Alessia Russo’s 80th-minute strike looked to be enough for the Gunners, but they were caught out at a late corner as Hobson – an 81st minute substitute – rose highest above Emily Fox to nod home after a corner. It was Hobson’s first ever senior goal and was just rewards for the dogged hosts, who defended well for long periods and punished some profligate finishing from Arsenal.

Beth Mead endured a quiet afternoon but had a hand in Russo’s volleyed opener. But both were powerless to stop Everton and the draw means Arsenal’s chances of winning the WSL will be completely gone if City can win at relegated Bristol City later on Sunday.

Chelsea will have two games in hand on their rivals, having been in Women’s Champions League action this weekend.
