Police arrested a suspect who allegedly broke into the home of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass while she and her family were present.

Early Sunday morning, police said the suspect smashed the back window of the home to get inside the Getty House, which is basically the White House but for the city’s mayors. A neighbor told KTLA the invasion attempt was surprising given the home is guarded by a fence and a gate and most likely video surveillance.

That’s probably why the cops caught the crook so fast.

Police identified 29-year-old Ephraim Matthew Hunter as the suspect and arrested him within 30 minutes of the break-in attempt, according to jail records. Hunter is charged with felony burglary and his bail is set for $100,000.

It’s unclear if Hunter made contact with the mayor or her family once inside the home but police confirmed no one was harmed.

“Mayor Bass and her family were not injured and are safe. The Mayor is grateful to LAPD for responding and arresting the suspect,” said Deputy Mayor of Communications Zach Seidl in a statement.

The incident is still under investigation as detectives try to discover the motive of the break-in. At the moment, questions still remain whether Hunter targeted the mayor specifically, if he had any accomplices or what his criminal background may be.

However, this is isn’t the first time Mayor Bass encountered an attempted burglary.

Back in 2022, when Bass was still a U.S. Representative and just entered her bid for mayor, Bass’ personal home was burglarized and two firearms were stolen, according to The Los Angeles Times.

In that case, two men pleaded no contest to burglary and grand theft of a firearm.
