The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman is now set to carry out an investigation into his death under standard procedure.

Field was jailed for life in 2001 for the rape and murder of 14-year-old Surrey schoolboy Roy Tutill.

The youngster was tragically killed in 1968 but justice wasn’t sought until the 90s.

Field was living in Solihull, West Mids, when he was stopped for drink-driving in 1999.

He had a DNA sample taken which cops then matched to the one taken in Tutill’s case.

During his trial Field, then 65, pleaded guilty to murder but not sexual assault before being caged for life.

Disturbed pensioner Field was also the main suspect in the disappearance case of David Spencer, 13, and Patrick Warren, 11.

The schoolboys vanished on Boxing Day in 1996 after playing near their homes, also in Solihull.

Both boys had told their parents they were going to visit one of Patrick’s brothers – but were never seen or heard from again.

Patrick was riding his brand-new Apollo bicycle, which had been a Christmas present, while David was on foot.

The pair were last spotted at a petrol station at 00.45am on December 27, 1996. They were reported missing the next day.

Patrick’s red Apollo bicycle was later discovered in the bin area at the back of the petrol station.

They became the first children to appear on milk cartons – with their faces plastered across 770 Iceland stores as part of a campaign by the National Missing Persons Helpline.

Despite two major police investigations being launched into the boys’ disappearance, their bodies have never been found.
