Simone Biles Finally Speaks on Her Husband’s ‘She’s the Lucky one’ Comment and The Backlash

These days, Simone Biles is pretty busy preparing to go for the gold at the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris in July. But the gymnast took time away from her training schedule to stop by the Call Her Daddy podcast on April 16, where she shared her feelings about the now-viral comments her husband, NFL player Jonathan Owens, made about their relationship last year.

“It was all for him. So I think they were mad that he didn’t include me in the interview, but he has to have his moments too, and I let him have it,” she said.

Biles was referring to Owens’ December 2023 appearance on The Pivot podcast. During the conversation, he talked about not knowing Biles and the extent of her stardom before they met, even joking that she was the lucky one.

“I always say that the men are the catch,” he said at the time.

Those words set off tons of people online, some even suggesting the Olympic gold medalist leave Owens.

“Why is she smiling like that when this man is making her look like a fool” and “Simone needs to run. Better don’t have a child with him. There’re so many red flags 🚩” were some of the cautionary comments users left on the post.

But in her interview this week, Biles said that those who were up in arms were getting it all wrong.

“He never said I wasn’t a catch,” she said. “He said he was a catch because he is. I’ve never met a man like him. A lot of people that meet him are like, oh my gosh. I want a man like that, like Jonathan.”

The Pivot host Ryan Clark agrees. In a December 2023 video he accused people of picking apart one statement rather than listening to the entire interview.

“Every time they looked at one another, you can tell how beautiful [their meet] was to them,” he said at the time. “But everyone has now twisted that and taken that and made it something negative. But what people haven’t done is watch the entire show.”

But while Biles says she saw the calls to divorce him as funny at first, they began to sting and eventually pushed her past her breaking point.

“That really hurt that they were talking about my husband like that. Because for me, it’s like talk about me all you want, but don’t come for my family,” she said.

She added that people who only see his online persona don’t get to see how sweet he really is.

“Like, truly, I’ve never met a man like him. He still opens my doors,” she said.
