How Much Money Did O.J. Simpson Have When He Died?

Before the country was captivated by the white Bronco “chase” and what was then dubbed “the trial of the century,” O.J. Simpson was revered as an MVP with a winning smile.

But the NFL player and sports commentator, who was known for his endorsements and on-screen roles, also had a load of legal debt after facing trial for the murders of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ron Goldman. So what did Simpson have left when he died on April 10?

Simpson’s fortune is complicated. At the time of the murder trial, it was estimated that he was worth somewhere near $11 million, a big chunk of which was spent on his legal defense, according to The New York Times.

Although he was acquitted of the murder charges, a 1997 civil suit found him guilty, and a judge ordered him to pay $33.5 million in damages. At the time of his death, the families had not received the full amount, which has risen to $100 million with interest, according to The Daily Mail.

The Book

In 2006, Simpson secured a deal for a book titled, “If I Did It” along with a television interview. He received somewhere around $600,000 in an advance, but the deal was squashed due to complaints from the public. The Goldman family eventually secured the rights to the deal.

What About All of His Stuff?

You would think a Heisman Trophy winner and NFL MVP would have memorabilia worth a small fortune. But in Simpson’s case, his stuff actually cost him.

On Sept. 16, 2007, three days after the heist, Simpson was arrested. He was initially held without bail, but that was changed and set to $125,000, per the Los Angeles Times. Simpson paid that amount on Sept. 19, 2007, and was released the following day.

Simpson claimed the stuff belonged to him, but he was found guilty of robbery and kidnapping charges and served nine years in prison.

The Independent reports that creditors and the Goldman family are not legally allowed to go after his income – a combination of $42,000 per year in Social Security, a Screen Actors Guild pension and a pension somewhere between $125,000 and $300,00 per year from the NFL.
