WNBA star Brittney Griner and her wife Cherelle made a touching announcement on social media over the weekend — delighting fans who’ve watched their journey over the years.

On Saturday, the Griner family shared that they’re expecting their first child together. “Can’t believe we’re less than three months away from meeting our favorite human being,” wrote Cherelle Griner over an Instagram photo of she and Griner holding hands over an ultrasound.

While overseas for an off-season basketball game in Russia, the Olympic medalist was detained by Russian authorities for having cannabis oil in her luggage. Despite testifying that she had accidentally packed the oil, a Russian court sentenced Griner to nine years in a Russian prison.

The U.S. State Department was eventually able to secure her release with a prisoner swap after Griner spent 300 days in custody. Throughout the ordeal, her wife Cherelle, whom she met in college, stood by her side

Cherelle lobbied the United States government to do more to save Griner, working to make sure her wife’s story didn’t get lost in the news cycle. When President Joe Biden announced Griner’s release, Cherelle was at the White House.

The pair’s love story set in the backdrop of an international crisis was incredibly moving, and well wishes have continued to roll in for the expecting couple.
