As the news of O.J. Simpson’s death continues to send shockwaves throughout the entertainment, sports and news world, the Goldman family is still searching for some semblance of justice.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail, David Cook, an attorney for Ron Goldman’s family, revealed that Simpson died owing more than $100 million in accrued debt stemming from the civil suit they filed against him shortly following the conclusion of his criminal trial in 1995. (As you know, Goldman was killed alongside Simpson’s wife Nicole Brown Simpson in 1994.)

While Simpson was found not guilty in the criminal suit, a jury unanimously found him liable for the deaths of Brown and Goldman and ordered him to pay $33.5 million.

Per Cook, the last legal filings he made on behalf of the family made was back in June 2022, when they claimed Simpson still owed more than $96 million thanks to accrued debt. They also allege that the late NFL star had only paid a measly $133,000 since 1997.

Prior to Simpson’s death, they looked into his children’s assets as well as any real estate the deceased sports star may have purchased in Florida. Now, they’ll be turning their attention to any trusts and going through Nevada’s probate court in an attempt to collect.

Cook described how he renewed the judgment in 2015, placing it at $57 million. Two years later, when OJ was released from a Nevada prison after serving nine years for a robbery and kidnapping conviction, he estimated the debt to be ‘a touch under $70 million.’And in March 2021, a Nevada garnishment case listed the ‘amount owed’ by Simpson as ‘$75,164,425.74.’

“We have to start over here,” Cook explained. “We’re going to work on that. There might be something out there. We’ve had this problem for a long long time. It could be in a trust, it could be probate. It could be all gone. I’m in San Francisco. The lawyers we hired in Nevada, they were working with me. At this point, we’re just starting out.”

“I’ve done this work for 47 years. We don’t know what’s in Nevada. We’ve had this problem for a long, long time. You can be shocked, you can walk up on something and say there’s nothing there.”

Money aside, the news of Simpson’s family hasn’t brought as much peace to the Goldman family as one might think: Ron’s father Fred said that the news was just another reminder that his son is no longer with them.

“The only thing I have to say is, it’s just further reminder of Ron being gone all these years,” Fred Goldman said in a phone interview with NBC News. “It’s no great loss to the world. It’s a further reminder of Ron’s being gone.”

In a followup statement, Fred and his family said in part: “We will continue to advocate for the rights of all victims and survivors, ensuring our voices are heard both within and beyond the courtroom. Thank you for keeping our family, and most importantly Ron, in your hearts for the last 30 years.”
