Former President Donald Trump has never been shy about making grandiose comparisons. For reference, Trump previously compared the potential loss of some of his real estate assets to Jesus being betrayed at the Last Supper and nailed to the cross. But his decision to compare himself to late South African leader Nelson Mandela is really rubbing people the wrong way.

In a Truth Social post on Saturday, Trump ranted about Judge Juan Merchan’s latest gag order ruling in the hush money case against him comparing the potential that he could theoretically go to jail for violating the order to Mandela’s decades-long political incarceration.

“If this Partisan Hack wants to put me in the ‘clink’ for speaking the open and obvious TRUTH, I will gladly become a Modern Day Nelson Mandela – It will be my GREAT HONOR,” he posted on Saturday.

Mandela was famously jailed for twenty-seven years for fighting for the rights of Black Africans in Apartheid South Africa. In contrast, Trump is accused of falsifying business records to conceal “hush money” payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels. The former President is also facing multiple felony charges for election interference.

The comparison rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.

Rev. Al Sharpton called Trump’s comments an “insult” while on Morning Joe.

“The insult of that is that Nelson Mandela did 27 years in jail to, among other things, get Blacks in South Africa the right to vote. Trump’s facing jail for denying Blacks and others the right to vote…He’s the direct opposite of Mandela,” said Sharpton.

On social media, users sounded off about Trump’s comments.

“Nelson Mandela looks just like the people Donald Trump and his father denied housing.” tweeted one user.

“Imagine a racist, miscreant like Donald Trump, claiming that going to jail for contempt of court is equivalent to Nelson Mandela going to prison for fighting the racist system of apartheid. The caucacity of this vile, demented, bigot,” tweeted Bishop Talbert Swan.
