‘Big time player,’ Novak Djokovic snubs Carlos Alcaraz to crown World No. 2 Jannik Sinner as the ‘best player in the world’

Serbian tennis ace Novak Djokovic has admitted that Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner is the best player in the world currently.

Reflecting upon the 22-year-old’s success this season, Djokovic has no hesitation in declaring that Sinner is ahead of everyone on the Tour at the moment. The Serbian also talked about the improvements Sinner has made so far in his career.

As Djokovic prepares for the clay season ahead and might face Sinner at the Monte-Carlo Masters, the Serbian talked about his opponent. The 36-year-old hailed the Italian youngster for his improved gameplay as well as his temperament.

The 24-time Grand Slam title champion who is known for pushing his opponents to limits and staying in the hunt till the very end, praised Sinner for being there and winning the big matches. The Serbian believes that the 22-year-old has evolved into a big-time player now.

Jannik is the best player in the world this year so far. He has had tremendous success. He has improved a lot. Overall his game, his serve, his movement and mentally he is always there. In the important matches the difference of Jannik in the past six months and before that is he is winning the big matches. He learned from his experiences before and made himself a tougher player. More of a big time player. Novak Djokovic said to ATP Tour.

Novak Djokovic talks about his expectations at Monte Carlo

While Novak Djokovic was all praise for Jannik Sinner, the Serbian said that he has little expectations of himself at the Monte-Carlo Masters. As Djokovic has failed to win a title in the last seven editions of the ATP 1000 event, he is not looking far ahead of himself.

Also, the below-par start to the 2024 season has affected the Serbian’s confidence. Djokovic says that the way he has played so far this season, his chances at the first clay-court tournament look slim. Notably, it is just the second time in six years that the World No. 1 has arrived in Monte-Carlo after not winning a title earlier in the season.

My expectations are not very high, with the way I have been playing this year at the tournaments and also the results that I had in Monaco in previous years were not great, so I keep my expectations low. For me it is about building my game on clay courts and trying to reach the peak again. Novak Djokovic said

It is also worth mentioning that Djokovic has had his share of struggles at the Monte Carlo Masters. The Serbian has not won a title since 2015. In fact, he has failed to go past the quarterfinal stage in the last six editions. In the last three editions, the best Djokovic has managed is a third-round qualification.
