Stellar Blade’s Eve isn’t sexy enough, actually | Kaser Focus

Shift Up recently launched a demo for its upcoming action-adventure game Stellar Blade on the PlayStation 5. Ever since gamers had the chance to play it, there’s been a bit of a controversy over the design of the main character, Eve. She’s been designed with an eye for … let’s call it the male gaze. Her outfits are primarily a series of shiny, skintight suits with a variety of accent elements. And some gamers are very okay with this, while others find it a bit more distasteful. I however, have a different problem with the game’s design — it’s not sexy enough.

If I may weigh in here, as someone who’s favorite game character is Bayonetta and whose comfort character growing up was Lara Croft (and Nancy Drew, but that’s another story): Personally, I have no issue with a game character having sex appeal. It’s as interesting a design element as any other. But I think, if you’re going to do it, do it properly. The problem I have with Eve’s design is that 1) most of the outfits don’t feel coherent, and 2) they don’t look like something Eve herself would choose to wear. And I don’t mean the skintight suits — I can buy that a nimble cyberpunk super soldier wears those for greater flexibility and freedom of movement. I mean the other design elements they’ve worked in.

Eve’s default Planet Diving Suit, the green one they’ve shown in the promotional material, is accented with a white lace dicky, a green necktie and mechanic gloves. The gloves I can maybe excuse as being pilot’s gear, but in what universe is a futuristic soldier dedicated to eliminating giant parasites wearing an easily grabbable necktie? I would have preferred a plunging neckline with some neon lights bolted to her collarbone. At least that would be consistent with the rest of the outfit. If you’re going to be sexy, be sexy. None of this avant-garde fashion nonsense. I would even say the Skin Suit needs to just be the color of Eve’s skin: That weird duo-colored tan pattern just makes it look like she spilled the wrong shade of foundation all over herself.

But who knows — I may feel differently once I’ve played the full game and seen what it has to offer. Speaking of which, I’ll be playing more of Stellar Blade’s demo over the weekend! I’ll also probably check out Open Roads, which is quite the contrast. I’m still trying to recover from March 22’s one-two-three punch, so I still have some Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Rise of the Ronin to play, but I may take a break from that to rejoin Princess Peach. What a time to be alive!
