Kevin, a writer at DIY Lawn Expert, shared some of the most common mistakes beginner landscapers make.

Although he also got off to a rough start with his own lawn, a few tricks helped him net the greenest grass on the block.

“Two years ago I had the worst lawn on the street, now I have one of the best,” he wrote on his website.

“DIY Lawn Expert is a website where I share things about lawn care as I learn them, condensing my research and experimentation.

“My goal is to help other homeowners establish and maintain a great lawn, in an efficient and affordable way.”

Kevin explained that the most common mistake he sees is that homeowners are often overzealous with watering.

“Over-watering your lawn actually causes more damage than a lack of water,” he said.

“Most turf grasses can handle dry spells, but not flooding.

“If you overwater, roots stay within the top few inches of the soil’s surface, making the grass dependent on you for its survival and it becomes more susceptible to fungus and diseases.”

Lawns, he revealed, may require much less water than many would expect.

“As a rule of thumb, turf grass needs about an inch of water per week in the summer to maintain green color and active growth,” he said.

When the weather is cool, turf requires even less water and only a little more in hot, dry weather.

Kevin added that once he nailed down the basics of lawn maintenance, something that often went ignored, he noticed a dramatic change in the health of his grass.

“Lawn problems that keep coming back are often a sign that your lawn care maintenance practices need to change,” he said.

“The most common and important maintenance items are proper mowing, fertilizing, and watering. These form the golden trifecta of lawn maintenance.”

Lastly, Kevin recommended dedicated homeowners stay on top of overgrown vegetation.

“A less obvious lawn maintenance practice, that’s often overlooked, is ensuring your lawn receives adequate sunlight,” he explained.

“The main concern with sunlight is ensuring that you have the right type of seed for your amount of sun in a given area.

“However, problems arise as the vegetation surrounding your lawn grows, which can make an enormous difference to how much sun your lawn receives.”
