The week in wildlife – in pictures: Neil the Seal, a shy echidna and a lion in the suburbs

Perhaps the shyest of this week’s animals, this elusive echidna was photographed in July for the first time since 1961. Scientists from Oxford University were on a four-week trip to the Cyclops mountains of Indonesia, and managed to catch an Attenborough’s long-beaked echidna (to give it its full name) in their camera trap on their last day. ‘I shouted out to my colleagues, “We found it, we found it” – I ran in from my desk to the living room and hugged the guys,’ said biologist James Kempton.The Guardian
