Shops, charities, big organisations and transport providers offer discounts to help the elderly get out and about.

Here’s our round-up of what’s available . . . 

TRAVEL: People of state pension age in England and those over 60 in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland get free bus passes.

Over-60s can travel on London buses, Tubes and trains with a 60+ London Oyster card, costing £20 at first, then £10 a year to renew.

On trains across the country, the Senior Railcard, which costs £30 for one year and £70 for three years, offers a third off tickets.

The National Express Senior Coachcard costs £15 per year and gets you a third off coach travel.

FUN: National Trust members who are 60 or over and have held membership for the last three consecutive years get 25 per cent off their annual subscription. This brings the price to £63 for individuals and £104.40 for couples.

Senior membership from English Heritage is £63 for over-65s, down from £69.

The Odeon cinema holds screenings for seniors, with tickets costing £3.50, while big football, rugby and cricket clubs offer senior discounts on season tickets and membership costs.

SHOPPING: Iceland offers ten per cent off for over-60s every Tuesday. Boots has special offers on its Advantage Card for over-60s, with extra points for spending on certain brands.

HEALTH: In the UK, only England charges for prescriptions, but they become from free once you turn 60.

You can also get free eye tests from the same age. Specsavers and Boots Opticians offer discounts on glasses for the over-60s, too.
