The Justice League’s famed Hall of Justice better get a doggie door.
Dwayne Johnson flexes power paws voicing Krypto the Super-Dog in the animated “DC League of Super-Pets” (in theaters Friday). Superman’s furry BFF (best friend forever) forms his own supergroup with a motley crew of kryptonite-charged shelter pets that includes body-sniffing hound dog Ace (Kevin Hart).
Johnson, a “Super-Pets” producer, says he understands the appeal of heroic dogs on screen. There’s respect, even if it means that adorable canine might become competition for movie roles – even for The Rock.
“It’s very easy for a dog to beat me out of a job,” says Johnson. “But I’ve been concerned about job viability since ‘Baywatch.’ “
Johnson, 50, spoke to USA TODAY about his love for dogs, going dark as DC’s antihero “Black Adam” (out Oct. 21) and losing his first presidential election:

Question: I’m just noticing that Krypto’s nose and head are subtly shaped like Superman’s shield. Did you see that?
Dwayne Johnson: I do know this, I produced the movie. All the hours I spent asking, “How about this? Add this!” And Krypto has my eyebrows, smile, caring eyes and thick neck.
Q: Your French bulldog gets a full-name mention in the credits. How did Hobbs Bruce Wee Johnson come about?
Johnson: It’s Hobbs from the “Fast & Furious” franchise, and Bruce Wee is his nickname. Like a little Bruce Lee.
Q: The “Wee” part threw me off. What’s Hobbs’ most endearing super quality?
Johnson: Hobbs is 7. And after all these years, when he wants to go outside, he’ll just stand inches in front of the door. He won’t bark or growl. Just stand there until somebody hopefully notices. That could be 30 minutes, an hour. Sometimes he’ll just stand and that’s it.
Q: Krypto has the ultimate cheat day in “Super-Pets,” noshing on strawberry ice cream while watching “The Great British Bake Off.” How autobiographical was that scene?
Johnson: Emily Blunt turned me onto “The Great British Bake Off” while we were filming “Jungle Cruise.” She would talk about how she was bingeing it on Netflix, and I finally watched it. She got me hooked. And I actually started baking at home. I recently made malasada, a Portuguese doughnut. It came out really well.

Q. You recently posted an Instagram cheat meal consisting of a dozen eggs, turkey bacon and a heaping plate of homemade biscuits with a honey drizzle. How much of that did you eat?
Johnson: The whole thing. In context, it was a cheat meal on a Sunday, which is also my post-workout meal. By that time, I’m really hungry and my body needs all that food and calories, carbs and sugars. I love to take my time with it. And if I feel like people enjoy seeing what I’ve laid out that’s about to get destroyed, I will film it. Those biscuits are homemade and so good.
There are also days where I’m going to eat whatever I want. I’ve had a long day, so (expletive) it. I eat everything and anything.
Q: Black Adam makes an animated appearance in “Super-Pets” with his own dog sidekick. What was that about?
Johnson: I wanted to make a moment. So I said, what if we introduce Black Adam somewhere in this movie and Black Adam’s pet? What would that look like?
Q: So Black Adam will have a dog in his movie? And will it be Hobbs, who had a cameo in “Hobbs & Shaw”?
Johnson: It is not Hobbs. He has refused to work since “Hobbs & Shaw.” He’s like “I’m done.” But as to whether my character has a pet in “Black Adam,” I’m going to keep that a secret.
Q: In the season finale of “Young Rock,” presidential candidate The Rock, more than loosely based on a potential future presidential candidate Rock, lost his election. And lost your home state of Florida in that TV election. What happened?
Johnson: There was a lot of “Young Rock” debate on whether I should become president or not. And ultimately I think we landed in the right place. It was important for me not to win because it felt like the easy way to go. It was more interesting this way. We are shooting Season 3 now. This might turn around.
