Gael Monfils withdraws from Wimbledon, but he’s likely to be fine for US Open

Gael Monfils has confirmed he will miss Wimbledon after failing to recover from his foot surgery in time.

Monfils announced in May that he would required a ‘small procedure’ in his heel, although he had hoped to be back back for the The Championships.

The 35-year-old was named as the 19th seed earlier this week, but he wil now drop out instead and focus on returning later in the year at Hamburg and Kizbuhel.

“I have started to train again this week and I have felt really good,” Monfils said on Twitter.

“I will now be able to increase gradually my training and spend more time on the court to get back in shape both from a physical and tennis point of view.
