Superhero and comic-book movies have been a force at the box office since the late 2010s, most notably Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” becoming the second-highest grossing film of all time at $2.798 billion, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
This stretch, however, didn’t start with supersonic flying. Rather, it began with web-slinging. Spider-Man, the hero who gained his spider-like powers after being bit by a radioactive arachnid, helped the genre find its footing when the first Spider-Man film was released in 2002. Since then, the Spider-Man movies have become sprawling and, with that expansion, confusing.

What are Spider-Man movies in order?
There are nine Spider-Man movies, eight of which are live-action and one an animated film. Starting in 2002 and with the most recent installment in 2021, three different main actors have been in the masked spotlight across the decades.
The Spider-Man movies began in 2002, with actor Tobey Maguire first taking on the crimson mantle. A sequel arrived in 2004, and the trilogy ended in 2007.
After this, Sony took over the hero by creating two more movies with a different man beneath the mask. Andrew Garfield was the lead actor for a new film in 2012, as well as its sequel in 2014.
Garfield’s series never transformed into a trilogy, as a new saga was started with Tom Holland in 2017. This series is connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with other heroes like Iron Man, Captain America and Thor. Characters from that universe make appearances throughout Holland’s films; he also appears in the MCU team-up films.
6. Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
In the middle of the series, though, an animated Spider-Man film was released from Sony in 2018. This film has no connection to Tom Holland’s series. It is a completely separate entity with different characters and a different tale. An animated sequel continuing the story is expected in 2023.
7. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
After this, the Tom Holland trilogy continued with a sequel in 2019 and another in 2021. While this completed the trilogy, there may be more films in this saga in the future.
