Tiger Woods suffers multiple leg injuries in single-car crash in Southern California

Golfer Tiger Woods was seriously injured in a one-car, rollover crash in the Los Angeles area on Tuesday morning, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The sheriff’s department said in a statement that Woods “was extricated from the wreck with the ‘jaws of life'” by Los Angeles County firefighters and paramedics before being transported to a local hospital. Woods was the only person in the car.

Though he was unable to confirm Woods’ identity, Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesperson Christopher Thomas classified the crash victim’s injuries to USA TODAY Sports as serious but non-life threatening.

Woods’ longtime agent, Mark Steinberg, said only that the golfer suffered “multiple leg injuries.”

“He is currently in surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support,” Steinberg said Tuesday afternoon.

According to authorities, the crash occurred early Tuesday morning, shortly after 7 a.m. PT, in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the vehicle sustained “major damage.”

Tiger Woods' vehicle was tipped on its side in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.

Video of the crash site on CNN showed Woods’ car badly mangled approximately 20 feet off the road. The entire front end of the car was destroyed. Several pieces of the vehicle had broken off and were to the side.

Thomas said the fire department arrived on scene at 7:28 a.m., and that the vehicle’s only occupant – Woods – was transported to a local hospital at 7:40 a.m.

“Basically what they did was they broke the windshield out,” Thomas said. “… They did have to extricate him, and you can see on there where they pulled the windshield out and they removed him via the windshield.”

Before the crash, Woods, 45, apparently had a packed schedule. Golf Digest said Woods was in California for a two-day content shoot with it and GOLFTV. He also served as host for the PGA Tour’s Genesis Invitational.

Golf Digest also reported there were pictures of Woods on social media with Dwyane Wade and David Spade at Rolling Hills Country Club. They added he didn’t hit any practice balls or play any rounds.

Actor Jada Pinkett Smith wrote in a tweet that she was visiting with Woods on Monday.

Woods, 45, is one of the most decorated golfers in the history of the sport and has won 15 majors over the course of his career.

This isn’t the first time Woods has been in a car accident. On Nov. 27, 2009, at about 2:30 a.m. outside of his former Florida home, his car hit several hedges, a fire hydrant and then came to rest after hitting a tree.

Woods was driving a 2009 black Cadillac Escalade. At the time Daniel Saylor, the Windermere chief of police, told the Associated Press that police found Woods outside of the vehicle with his wife, Elin, nearby.

The accident happened several days after the tabloid publication, the National Enquirer, published a story saying Woods was having an affair. Not long after the accident, and the story, Woods would confess to living a secret life and having multiple affairs.
