Caleb Ewan lifted the mood in the Lotto-Soudal camp on Monday after the Australian sprinter won stage three at the Tour de France.

Having lost two Lotto-Soudal team-mates — John Degenkolb and Philippe Gilbert — following a disappointing opening stage in Nice on Saturday, Ewan started this hilly 198-kilometre stage through the Alpine foothills with fewer support riders than his rivals.

However, Ewan was delivered to the finishing line before the tiny sprinter, racing into a headwind, used his diminutive frame to his advantage.

Weaving his way through a tightly packed field, Ewan took the stage ahead of Irish national champion Sam Bennett (Deceuninck-Quick Step) who was second, while Italian and European road race champion Giacomo Nizzolo (NTT) finished in third spot.

The Tour de France continues on Tuesday with the 157km run from Sisteron to Orcières-Merlette and concludes in Paris on September 20 with the 122km stage from Mantes-la-Jolie to Paris Champs-Élysées.
