Three Launching 5G in UK Just in Time for Launch of New iPhones

Three, the cellular carrier in the UK, is rolling out 5G networks just ahead of the launch of Apple’s next-generation iPhones. The Cupertino-based firm’s upcoming smartphones are expected to feature 5G connectivity.

Three’s 5G mobile network will be launched by the end of this month in select cities and areas in the UK. The carrier had already launched 5G networks for home broadband connections in the country, but it said that it needed more time to launch 5G mobile networks as it needed to do some extra work on all the elements and things like “cloud core.”

The company’s 5G network will be rolled out in major markets such as Birmingham, Glasgow, and London. The service will be available in 25 cities and towns, extending the service to 80% of the country by the end of 2021. Unlike its competitors such as BT’s EE, Three said that it would not cap 5G speeds and there would be no extra costs for all its users: contract, SIM-only, and PAYG (pay as you go).

Three UK’s Chief Executive Dave Dyson said that the company will be ready for “we are prepped and ready for that critical inflection point,” about the impending launch of 5G iPhones. Users on the network can also fully utilize faster data download and upload speeds on the recently launched Galaxy S20 series of smartphones.

Historically, Three had lagged in terms of airwaves compared to its rivals. However, the British carrier, owned by Hong Kong’s Hutchison, said that it holds more 5G spectrum than any of its competitors. It is the only carrier with 100MHz of 5G spectrum, which is required to meet the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) standard for a 5G network rollout.

Apple’s upcoming three high-end smartphones would be launched in both 4G and 5G variants, to suit different markets. The company will reportedly launch a 6.1-inch iPhone with an LCD display, a 6.1-inch iPhone with an OLED screen, and a 6.7-inch iPhone with an OLED screen. 5G variants of new iPhones are expected to support mmWave and sub-6GHz 5G networks.
