The ‘Dark Money’ Deluge for 2020

“Democratic donors have built a formidable dark money network to obscure the source of more than $600 million funneled to liberal groups and initiatives last year, tax forms show,” The Washington Free Beacon recently reported. “The establishment of the complex network of nonprofits marks the Democrats’ adoption of a once-derided Republican strategy: building a massive funding network that provides donors anonymity.”

It’s not just that Democrats are adopting a Republican strategy; it’s that Democrats created the current campaign-finance system that limits contributions directly to political candidates, almost necessitating independent groups who raise money for political purposes. They may claim to hate the influence of political action committees and the like, but they created the “monster.” After all, money is like water — it will find the cracks.

Democrats love to talk about “getting money out of politics,” as if that will make their cause pure as the wind-driven snow. But money also is effectively political speech itself. The First Amendment was crafted to protect political speech from Congress’s interference. Thus, we believe most campaign-finance restrictions run afoul of the First Amendment, because paying to make your political speech heard is about as fundamentally American as it gets.

Of course, Democrats head to the fainting couch whenever the names David or Charles Koch are uttered, but they have no problem accepting millions of dollars each year from leftist billionaires like George Soros. The hypocrisy of their stance is what’s so galling.

On a final note, we’d quibble with the characterization of this money as “dark.” In an age when leftists sic the wrath of the mob on conservatives who fund causes they believe in, it’s certainly reasonable to desire anonymity when donating. Moreover, the word “dark” somehow implies something sinister when, again, this is simply political speech. That said, when the purpose of this leftist money is to foist socialism on the American people in the 2020 election, it doesn’t get any darker than that.
